What is a Scripture Cookie?

A Scripture Cookie is a verse or short passage that is routinely repeated out of context and in the process loses the meaning intended by God and the author. Sometimes this is done out of ignorance in a superstitious manner (a la fortune cookie). Sometimes it's done in an attempt to proof-text a tradition not actually found in the Bible. The use of Scripture Cookies is usually an indication that entire chapters and books of the Bible aren't habitually read and that there is no exposure to expository preaching of the Bible.

The Scripture Cookie O' the Week will examine this phenomenon.
